Its chain of transmission is sahih. Sufyan is Thawri. Saeed bin Ibrahim bin Abdul-Rahman bin Awf, his reliability has already been established a number of times, most recently at 7499, and we explained there that he narrates from his uncle Abu Salama bin Abdul-Rahman bin Awf directly, and sometimes narrates from his cousin Umar bin Abu Salama, from his father. Here in [manuscript] J the name appears as Saad instead of Saeed, which is a clear printing error, and we have corrected it based on the two manuscripts and Jami al-Masanid.The addition of "from his father" is necessary in the chain, since Umar bin Abu Salama never met Abu Hurairah, but rather narrates from his father, from him, and this phrase was mistakenly omitted in all three original manuscripts. We have added it from Jami al-Masanid 7:462. This is further confirmed by the fact that if the hadith had come from Umar bin Abu Salama directly from Abu Hurairah, it would have been a broken (munqati) chain, and Ibn Kathir would not have left it unmentioned in a separate section devoted to this particular chain in Jami al-Masanid, as was his usual practice. Yet he did not do so, but instead mentioned it within the section on the hadiths of Abu Salama from Abu Hurairah.Moreover, the hadith is established in meaning through the narration of Abu Salama. Something similar has already appeared at 7251 and 7650, through the narration of Zuhri from Abu Salama, from Abu Hurairah. Its meaning has also already appeared through other routes from Abu Hurairah at 7229, 7249, 7649, and 7651.
