Two men quarreled, one from the Muslims and one from the Jews. The Muslim said, "By the One who chose Muhammad above all the worlds!"The Jew said, "By the One who chose Musa above all the worlds!"The Muslim became angry and struck the Jew on the eye. The Jew went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him of what had happened. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ summoned the Muslim and questioned him, and he admitted to it.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, "Do not give me preference over Musa, for on the Day of Resurrection people will be struck unconscious, and I will be the first to recover. I will find Musa already holding onto the side of the Throne, and I do not know whether he was among those who were struck unconscious and recovered before me, or whether he was among those whom Allah exempted."
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Bukhari related it in 5:52 from Yahya bin Qazaa, and in 11:318 from Abdul-Aziz bin Abdullah, both of them from Ibrahim bin Saad, from Ibn Shihab Zuhri, with this chain. Muslim related it in 2:226, by way of Yaqub bin Ibrahim bin Saad, from his father, with the same chain. Bukhari also related it in 13:377-378 from Yahya bin Qazaa, from Ibrahim, with the same chain, and by another route from Zuhri, from Abu Salama and Saeed bin Musayab. Bukhari also related it in 6:317-319 by way of Shuayb, from Zuhri, from Abu Salama and Ibn Musayab, both of them from Abu Hurairah. Here the Hafiz gave a thorough explanation of it, and Muslim likewise related it by way of Shuayb. The Hafiz said, the hadith is preserved from Zuhri by both routes. The author combined the two versions in the chapter on tawhid, indicating that it is established from him in both forms. By this the Hafiz points to Bukhari's version in 13:377-378.Ibn Majah related it in 4274, and Tabari in his tafsir, 24:21 (Bulaq edition), by another route from Abu Hurairah.Regarding his saying, "Do not prefer me over Musa," in manuscript H it reads "over" (an) instead of "over" (ala), which is an error, and we have corrected it from manuscripts K and M.Regarding his saying, "so I will be the first to regain consciousness," the Hafiz said in Fath al-Bari 6:319, the narrations in the Sahihayn do not differ in stating this absolutely, as being first. But in the version of Ibrahim bin Saad, as found in Ahmad and Nasai, it reads, "so I will be among the first to regain consciousness." Ahmad extracted it from Abu Kamil, and Nasai by way of Yunus bin Muhammad, both of them from Ibrahim. There is an objection to be raised against the Hafiz on this point, for Ahmad's version from Abu Kamil, from Ibrahim bin Saad, which is this very version, does not contain the added word "among" in any of the manuscript sources, but rather agrees with the versions found in the Sahihayn.
