The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "By the One in whose hand my soul rests, for one of you to take his rope, go to the mountain, gather firewood, carry it on his back, and then sell it to feed himself is better than begging from people. And for a person to fill his mouth with dirt is better than filling it with what Allah has forbidden him."
Its isnad is sahih. Saeed bin Yasar, Abu Hubab, whose biography was given earlier at 7230, and there has been disagreement about whose client (mawla) he was. Ibn Ishaq states definitively here that he was the client of Hasan bin Ali, and Ibn Saad likewise states this definitively (5:209–210), while also mentioning another view. Bukhari, in al-Kabir (1/2/476), mentions these two views along with a third. This hadith consists of two parts. The first concerns encouragement to work and the prohibition against begging. Its meaning has already appeared in similar form, from another route, at 7315, which contains an additional element not found here. The second part concerns the warning against consuming unlawful gain.Suyuti mentioned it in al-Jami al-Saghir (7212), attributing it to Bayhaqi in al-Shuab only, and Munawi criticized it on account of a daif narrator, meaning it came by a route other than the one in the Musnad. Munawi then also attributed it to Ahmad, Ibn Munee, and Daylami. Both parts together were mentioned by Munziri in al-Targheeb wal-Tarheeb as a single hadith (3:13), where he said, "Ahmad narrated it with a good (jayyid) isnad." Haythami likewise mentioned both parts as a single hadith in Majma al-Zawaid (10:293), saying, "Ahmad narrated it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except for Muhammad bin Ishaq, who has been deemed trustworthy." He also said, "It is found in the Sahih, apart from the episode about the dust." He means that the first part is found in the Sahih, and he is correct in saying so.
