The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Allah has angels who take turns among you, angels of the night and angels of the day, and they gather together at the dawn prayer and the afternoon prayer. Then those who spent the night with you ascend, and He asks them, though He knows best, 'How did you leave My servants?' They reply, 'We left them praying, and we came to them while they were praying.'"
حدثنا يزيد أخبرنا محمد عن موسى بن يسار
قال رسول الله ﷺ إن لله ملائكة يتعاقبون ملائكة الليل وملائكة النهار فيجتمعون في صلاة الفجر وصلاة العصر ثم يعرج إليه الذين كانوا فيكم فيسألهم وهو أعلم فيقول كيف تركتم عبادي فيقولون تركناهم يصلون وأتيناهم يصلون
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Musa bin Yasar Muttalibi, their freedman, is the paternal uncle of Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Yasar, who narrates from him, as previously mentioned in his biography under 7478. He is neither the brother nor a relative of Saeed bin Yasar, the narrator of the preceding hadith.Bukhari narrated the hadith with similar wording in 2:28-31 and 13:352-387, and Muslim in 1:175, both through the route of Malik, from Abu Zinad, from Araj, from Abu Hurairah. In both of their versions, it begins with the well-known wording, "Angels take turns among you, angels by night and angels by day." Hafiz went into lengthy discussion of this matter and of tracing the narrations that begin with "Allah has angels who take turns," but he failed to mention this particular narration.Ibn Khuzayma also narrated it in his Sahih, with similar wording but at greater length, as Munziri mentioned in Targhib wal-Tarhib, 1:164.
