Its chain is sahih, and this is the correct narration in our view, that Iyad bin Dinar heard it from Abu Hurairah, as we detailed in the previous chain. This narration contains an additional useful point, that Marwan bin Hakam appointed Abu Hurairah as his deputy over Madinah when he set out for Hajj. Marwan had been made governor of Madinah by Muawiya in the year 54, and was removed from it in Dhul-Qaidah of the year 57. During this governorship, Marwan led the people in Hajj twice, in the year 54 and in the year 55. So his appointment of Abu Hurairah as deputy over Madinah was either in one of these two years, or in both of them.
