Its chain of transmission is sahih. Thabit Zarqi is Thabit bin Saad bin Qays, from Banu Amir bin Zurayq (with the ra having a damma), the Ansari of Madinah. Ibn Saad traced his lineage in al-Tabaqat, 206, and he is a trustworthy tabii. Nasai and others deemed him trustworthy, and Ibn Manda said, "A well-known figure among the people of Madinah." Bukhari gave his biography in al-Kabir 1/1/167 and said, "He heard from Abu Hurairah." Ibn Abu Hatim also gave his biography in 1/1/456, and he has no narration except this hadith. Nasai said, "I do not know of anyone who narrated from him other than Zuhri."This hadith will come again with this same chain at 9227. Ibn Majah narrated it at 3777 from Abu Bakr bin Abu Shayba, from Yahya bin Saeed, from Uzai, with the same chain, and he added, after the words "do not curse the wind," the phrase "for it is from the breath of Allah." Bukhari likewise narrated it in Adab al-Mufrad, page 106, from Musaddad, from Yahya, with this same addition.Abu Dawud narrated it at 5097 [4:486 of Awn al-Mabud], through the route of Abdul-Razzaq, from Mamar, from Zuhri, at length within a story. It will come again in the Musnad at 7619 from Abdul-Razzaq. It will also come again at length within the story at 9288, from the narration of Muhammad bin Musab, from Uzai, from Zuhri. Hakim likewise narrated it, 4:285, through the route of Bahr bin Nasr, from Bishr bin Bakr, from Uzai, with the same chain, at length.In the printed copy of al-Mustadrak, "Sharik bin Bakr" appears in place of "Bishr bin Bakr." This is a clear printing error, since there is no narrator among those given biographies named Sharik bin Bakr. The one who narrates from Uzai, and from whom Bahr bin Nasr narrates, is Bishr bin Bakr.It will also come again at length within the story at 10725, from the narration of Yunus, from Zuhri.Bukhari alluded to it in al-Kabir, in the biography of Thabit bin Qays, following his usual brief manner of allusion. He said, "Muhammad bin Salam told me, Khalid bin Yazid informed us, Ibn Jurayj informed us, he said, Ziyad" (meaning Ziyad bin Saad) "informed me that Ibn Shihab informed him, he said, Thabit bin Qays informed me, that Abu Hurairah said, 'I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "The wind is from the breath of Allah."'"As for his saying "from the breath of Allah," with a fatha on the ra and a sukun on the waw, it means from his mercy toward his servants.
