The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Were it not that I would place hardship upon my community, I would have commanded them to use the tooth-stick with every ablution, and I would have delayed the night prayer until a third or half of the night had passed."
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Ibn Abu Saeed is Saeed bin Abu Saeed Maqburi. The hadith was narrated by Ibn Majah in a split form in two places, through Abu Usama and Abdullah bin Numayr, both from Ubaydullah bin Umar, from Saeed bin Abu Saeed Maqburi. He narrated the report about using the tooth-stick before every prayer at 287, and the report about delaying the night prayer until a third of the night or half the night at 691. Bayhaqi narrated it in Sunan al-Kubra 1:36 through Hammad bin Masada, from Ubaydullah, from Saeed bin Abu Saeed, with the same chain. Tirmidhi narrated the report about delaying the night prayer at 1:152, through Abda, from Ubaydullah bin Umar, from Saeed Maqburi.Bukhari mentioned the beginning of it as a suspended report at 4:137, saying, Abu Hurairah said, on the authority of the Prophet ﷺ, "Were it not that I would burden my nation, I would have commanded them to use the tooth-stick before every ablution." Hafiz explained in Fath al-Bari who connected this suspended report, saying that Nasai connected it through Bishr bin Umar, from Malik, from Ibn Shihab, from Humayd, from Abu Hurairah, with this wording, and it reached us with a higher chain in the section of Dhuhali. Ibn Khuzayma extracted it through Rawh bin Ubada, from Malik, with the wording, "I would have commanded them to use the tooth-stick with every ablution." This hadith is found in the Sahihayn, though with different wording, from a different route.Nasai also extracted it through Abdul-Rahman Sarraj, from Saeed Maqburi, from Abu Hurairah, with the wording, "Were it not that I would burden my nation, I would have made using the tooth-stick obligatory upon them with every ablution." Hafiz, despite his precision and thoroughness, may Allah have mercy on him, failed to point to this report from the Musnad. As for the report of Bishr bin Umar, which he attributed to Nasai, it may be found in Sunan al-Kubra.Bayhaqi narrated something similar to it in Sunan al-Kubra 1:35, through Ismail bin Abu Uways, from Malik, and then through the narration of Rawh bin Ubada, from Malik, and the narration of Rawh is the one that Hafiz attributed to Ibn Khuzayma. Bayhaqi then said, "This hadith," meaning the narration of Malik from Zuhri from Humayd, "is known through Rawh bin Ubada and Bishr bin Umar Zahrani, from Malik."As for the narration of Abdul-Rahman Sarraj, from Saeed Maqburi, which he also attributed to Nasai, it may be found in Sunan al-Kubra. Hakim narrated it in al-Mustadrak 1:146 with two chains going back to Hammad bin Zayd, "Abdul-Rahman Sarraj narrated to us, from Saeed bin Abu Saeed Maqburi." Hakim indicated that Bukhari and Muslim narrated it from Abu Hurairah but did not include the wording about it being obligatory. He then said, "It is sahih according to both their conditions together, and it has no defect." Bayhaqi narrated it at 1:36, from Hakim, with this same chain.Abdul-Rahman Sarraj is Abdul-Rahman bin Abdullah Sarraj Basri, a trustworthy narrator among the companions of Nafi. He was deemed trustworthy by Ahmad, Ibn Main, Abu Hatim, and others. The meaning of this hadith has already appeared at 7335 and 7338. We have also examined some of its chains of transmission in our commentary on Tirmidhi, number 167 [vol. 1, pp. 310-311].
