The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Leave me with what I have left you. Those before you were destroyed only because of their excessive questioning and their disagreements with their prophets. So whatever I forbid you, abstain from it, and whatever I command you, do as much of it as you are able."
حدثنا سفيان حدثنا ابن عجلان عن أبيه
قال رسول الله ﷺ ذروني ما تركتكم فإنما هلك من كان قبلكم بكثرة سؤالهم واختلافهم على أنبيائهم ما نهيتكم عنه فانتهوا وما أمرتكم فأتوا منه ما استطعتم
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Here it comes through the narration of Sufyan from Ibn Ajlan, from his father, from Abu Hurairah. Sufyan also has another chain for it, he also narrated it from Abu Zinad, from Araj, from Abu Hurairah, found in Ibn Hibban's Sahih, number 17 with our commentary, where he narrated it through Ibrahim bin Bashar, from Sufyan. Muslim likewise narrated it, 2:221, from Ibn Abu Umar, from Sufyan, but he did not quote the full wording, rather he referred it to another narration preceding it.This hadith is firmly established from Abu Hurairah, both at length and in abridged form, through many different routes, several of which we pointed out at that place in Ibn Hibban and in the commentary on the hadiths following it there, 18, 19, and 20. It will also come in the Musnad at 9519, through the narration of Yahya from Ibn Ajlan from his father. It will also come through other routes at 7492, 8129, 9779, 9888, 10029, 10260, and 10434.
