The Prophet ﷺ said, "I am to you like a father. When you go to relieve yourselves, do not face the qiblah or turn your backs to it." He forbade using dung or dry bones for cleaning oneself, and that a man should clean himself with his right hand.
حدثنا سفيان حدثنا ابن عجلان عن القعقاع بن حكيم عن أبي صالح
عن النبي ﷺ إنما أنا لكم مثل الوالد إذا أتيتم الغائط فلا تستقبلوا القبلة ولا تستدبروها ونهى عن الروث والرمة ولا يستطيب الرجل بيمينه
Its isnad is sahih. Ibn Majah also reported it in similar wording, no. 313, from Muhammad bin Sabbah, from Sufyan bin Uyayna, with this isnad. Abu Dawud also reported it, no. 7:18 of Awn al-Mabud, through Ibn Mubarak. And Nasai, 16:1, through Yahya bin Saeed. And Ibn Hibban in his Sahih, 611:2 of the Ihsan manuscript, through Wahib. All three of them narrated from Ibn Ajlan, with this account.Muslim, 1:88, reported from it the prohibition against facing the qibla or turning one's back to it while relieving oneself, through Suhayl, from Qaqa, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurairah.As for his statement, "and he should not clean himself," Ibn Athir said, "Istitaba" and "itaba" are euphemisms for cleaning oneself after relieving oneself. They are named from "tayyib" (cleanliness/fragrance), because a person makes his body clean by removing the filth from it through cleaning, meaning he purifies it.
