The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There is no charity except from a position of sufficiency. The upper hand is better than the lower hand, and begin with those you are responsible for."
حدثنا يعلى بن عبيد حدثنا عبد الملك عن عطاء
قال رسول الله ﷺ لا صدقة إلا عن ظهر غنى واليد العليا خير من اليد السفلى وابدأ بمن تعول
Its isnad is sahih. Abdul-Malik is Ibn Abu Sulayman Arzami, whose reliability was established earlier at 304, and we add here that Ibn Saad gave his biography in Tabaqat 6:244, saying, "He was trustworthy, reliable, and firm." Ibn Abu Hatim also gave his biography in Jarh wal-Tadil 2/2:366-368. Ata is Ibn Abu Rabah.Ahmad narrated this hadith, as will follow, through various routes, some matching the wording here, some longer, and some shorter. Among these are 9611, through Abdul-Malik from Ata, 9111, through Maqil bin Ubaydullah from Ata, 7727, through Ayub from Ibn Sirin, and 10175 and 10228, through Amash from Abu Salih. Among the longer versions are 10795 and 10830, through Zayd bin Aslam from Abu Salih. Among the shorter versions is 7342, through Abu Zinad from Araj, all of them from Abu Hurairah.Bukhari narrated it in his Sahih, 3:234, in shortened form, through Zuhri from Saeed bin Musayab from Abu Hurairah. Then on page 235 he narrated it at length, close to the version given here, through Hisham bin Urwa from his father from Abu Hurairah, though he did not give its wording in full, but instead referred to the hadith of Hakeem bin Hizam that preceded it. He set the chapter heading on page 233 using the wording at the beginning of the hadith, "There is no charity except out of surplus wealth." Hafiz said in Fath al-Bari, "Ahmad narrated it through Abu Salih with the wording, 'Charity is only what is given out of surplus wealth,' which is closer to the wording of the chapter heading. He also narrated it through Abdul-Malik bin Abu Sulayman from Ata from Abu Hurairah with the wording of the chapter heading, where he said, 'There is no charity except out of surplus wealth,' and so on."Bukhari narrated it in Adab al-Mufrad, page 31, at length, through Asim bin Bahdala from Abu Salih. This hadith is among those that Bukhari narrated alone, without Muslim, as Hafiz stated explicitly at the end of the Book of Zakat, 3:299, where he identifies the hadiths that Bukhari narrated alone at the end of each book of his Sahih. The explanation of the phrase "out of surplus wealth" was given earlier at 5680. Many hadiths on the upper hand have already passed, and we referred to some of them in the hadith of Abu Rimtha, 7105.
