Muawiya wanted to seize a piece of land belonging to Abdullah bin Amr called al-Waht. He ordered his servants, and they put on their armor and prepared to fight.I came to him and asked, "What is this?"He replied, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'There is no Muslim who is wronged and then fights and is killed except that he is killed as a martyr.'"

Its chain is daif, because of the ambiguity of the man from Banu Makhzum and his uncle. Tayalisi (2294) narrated it from Shubah, with this same chain. But the essence of the hadith is sahih, since its raised version has already appeared at 6522 with the wording, "Whoever is killed defending his property is a martyr." Its general meaning has also appeared repeatedly before, as we noted there, and it will come again at length and in brief many times, as we also noted previously.Al-Hafiz mentioned in Fath al-Bari (5:88) that Tabari narrated it through the route of Haywa bin Shurayh, from Abu Aswad, from Ikrima, and in it, an agent of Muawiya diverted a water spring to irrigate some land, and he approached a wall belonging to the family of Amr bin Al-As, intending to breach it so the spring water would flow through it onto the land. Abdullah bin Amr and his freedmen came forward with weapons and said, "By Allah, you will not breach our wall until none of us remains." He then related the hadith.Al-Hafiz said, the agent mentioned was Anbasah bin Abu Sufyan, as becomes clear from the narration of Muslim, and he was an agent for his brother over Makkah and Taif. The land mentioned was in Taif. The narration of Muslim that mentions Anbasah will come in similar form at 6922. And Wahat was a garden they owned in Taif, as we explained in detail at 6644.
