The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There are three traits which, if found in a person, mark him as a pure hypocrite. When he speaks, he lies. When he makes a promise, he breaks it. When he is entrusted with something, he betrays the trust. Whoever has one of these traits has in him a trait of hypocrisy until he abandons it."
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Walid bin Qasim: his reliability was established earlier at 848. Abu Qasim bin Walid Hamdani, the judge, is trustworthy. Ibn Main, Ajli, and others declared him trustworthy, and Bukhari gave his biography in al-Kabir 4/1/167-168, as did Ibn Abu Hatim in al-Jarh wal-Tadil 3/2/122-123, and Ibn Saad in al-Tabaqat 6:244. His father, Hajjaj, is Mujahid bin Jabr, the famous Meccan of the senior generation of Successors. The meaning of this hadith has already appeared at greater length at 6768 and 6864, narrated by Masruq from Abdullah bin Amr, with the wording, "Four things, whoever has them..." and so on, though it did not mention betrayal of trust, and it mentioned instead, "When he makes a covenant he breaks it, and when he disputes he acts wickedly." As for the narration given here, it is closer to the hadith of Abu Hurairah found in Bukhari 1:83-84 and Muslim 1:32.Hafiz Abu Bakr Firyabi related it in his book Sifat al-Nifaq, pages 50-51, from Abu Bakr bin Abu Shayba, from Ghundar, from Shuba, from Simak bin Harb, from Sabih bin Abdullah, from Abdullah bin Amr, who said, "Three things, whoever has them is a hypocrite, one who lies when he speaks, breaks his promise when he makes one, and betrays his trust when he is entrusted with something." He then recited this verse, "And among them are those who made a covenant with Allah, saying, 'If He gives us of His bounty...'" [the rest of the verses]. This is a mawquf narration, and its chain is sahih. It serves as a good corroborating witness for this hadith, since a report like it carries the ruling of a marfu narration.Sabih bin Abdullah, with a dammah on the sad, was a major Successor who lived during the time of Uthman and Ali. Bukhari gave his biography in al-Kabir 2/2/319 without mentioning any criticism of him.
