The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came into his house and said, "Abdullah bin Amr, have I not been told that you burden yourself with standing in prayer all night and fasting all day?"He replied, "I do indeed do that."The Prophet said, "It is enough for you, and I do not even say you should do this much, that you fast three days of every month. A good deed is rewarded tenfold, so it will be as though you have fasted the entire year."Abdullah said, "I insisted, so he was firm with me. I said, 'I find I have the strength for more than that.'"The Prophet said, "It is enough for you to fast three days each week."Abdullah said, "I insisted again, and he was firm with me. I said, 'I find I have strength for more.'"The Prophet ﷺ then said, "The most balanced fasting in the sight of Allah is the fasting of Dawud, half of the year." Then he said, "Your own self has a right over you, and your family has a right over you."So Abdullah continued to fast in that manner until old age and weakness overtook him, and he used to say, "I would have preferred to accept the concession of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ over my family and my wealth."
