Abu Salama bin Abdul-Rahman bin Awf reported,

I entered the home of Abdullah bin Amr bin As, and he questioned me, thinking I was from the family of Umm Kulthum bint Uqba. I said to him, "I belong to Kalbiyya bint Asbagh. I have come to ask you about what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entrusted to you or said to you."He said, "During the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I used to say, 'I will recite the entire Quran every day and night, and I will fast every single day.' Word of this reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so he came to me and entered my house and said,'Abdullah, has it not reached me that you say, I will fast every day and recite the Quran every day and night?'I replied, 'Yes, I did say that, Prophet of Allah.'He said, 'Do not do so. Fast three days of every month.'I said, 'I am capable of more than that.'He said, 'Then fast Mondays and Thursdays.'I said, 'I am capable of more than that, Prophet of Allah.'He said, 'Then fast one day and break your fast the next. That is the most balanced form of fasting before Allah, and it is the fast of Dawud , who never broke a promise when he gave one and never fled when he met the enemy. And recite the Quran once every month.'I said, 'I am capable of more than that, Prophet of Allah.'He said, 'Then recite it once every fortnight.'I said, 'I am capable of more than that, Prophet of Allah.'He said, 'Then recite it once every seven days, and do not exceed that.'Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ departed."

حدثنا يعقوب حدثنا أبي عن محمد بن إبراهيم بن الحارث

عن أبي سلمة بن عبد الرحمن بن عوف قال

دخلت على عبد الله بن عمرو بن العاص داره فسألني وهو يظن أني من بني أم كلثوم ابنة عقبة فقلت له إنما أنا للكلبية ابنة الأصبغ وقد جئتك لأسألك عما كان رسول الله ﷺ عهد إليك أو قال لك قال كنت أقول في عهد رسول الله ﷺ لأقرأن القرآن في كل يوم وليلة ولأصومن الدهر فبلغ ذلك رسول الله ﷺ عني فجاءني فدخل علي بيتي فقال ألم يبلغني يا عبد الله أنك تقول لأصومن الدهر ولأقرأن القرآن في كل يوم وليلة قال قلت بلى قلت ذاك يا نبي الله قال فلا تفعل صم من كل شهر ثلاثة أيام قال فقلت إني أقوى على أكثر من ذلك قال فصم الاثنين والخميس قال فقلت إني أقوى على أكثر من ذلك يا نبي الله قال فصم يوما وأفطر يوما فإنه أعدل الصيام عند الله وهو صيام داود عليه السلام وكان لا يخلف إذا وعد ولا يفر إذا لاقى واقرأ القرآن في كل شهر مرة قال فقلت إني لأقوى على أكثر من ذلك يا نبي الله قال فاقرأه في كل نصف شهر مرة قال قلت إني أقوى على أكثر من ذلك يا نبي الله قال فاقرأه في كل سبع لا تزيدن على ذلك ثم انصرف رسول الله ﷺ
