Ibn Umar set out intending to perform the Hajj at the time when Hajjaj had laid siege to Ibn Zubayr. He was told, "The people are likely to fight one another, and we fear they will prevent you from reaching the House."He replied, "You have had an excellent example in the Messenger of Allah" [Ahzab 33:21]. "In that case, I will do as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did. I call you to witness that I have made Umra obligatory upon myself."Then he set out, and when he reached the high ground of Bayda, he said, "Hajj and Umra are but one and the same. I call you to witness that I have now made Hajj obligatory upon myself along with my Umra."He brought along a sacrificial animal that he had purchased at Qudayd. He continued on until he arrived at Mecca, where he circumambulated the House and walked between Safa and Marwa. He did nothing more than that. He did not slaughter, shave, trim his hair, or release himself from anything he had entered ihram for, until the Day of Sacrifice arrived. Then he slaughtered and shaved, considering that his single circumambulation had fulfilled both his Hajj and his Umra and his initial circumambulation.Then he said, "This is exactly what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did."
حدثنا عبد الرزاق سمعت عبيد الله بن عمر وعبد العزيز بن أبي رواد يحدثان
خرج ابن عمر يريد الحج زمان نزل الحجاج بابن الزبير فقيل له إن الناس كائن بينهم قتال وإنا نخاف أن يصدوك فقال {لقد كان لكم في رسول الله أسوة حسنة} إذن أصنع كما صنع رسول الله ﷺ أشهدكم أني قد أوجبت عمرة ثم خرج حتى إذا كان بظهر البيداء قال ما شأن العمرة والحج إلا واحدا أشهدكم أني قد أوجبت حجا مع عمرتي وأهدى هديا اشتراه بقديد فانطلق حتى قدم مكة فطاف بالبيت وبين الصفا والمروة لم يزد على ذلك لم ينحر ولم يحلق ولم يقصر ولم يحلل من شيء كان أحرم منه حتى كان يوم النحر فنحر وحلق ثم رأى أن قد قضى طوافه للحج والعمرة ولطوافه الأول ثم قال هكذا صنع رسول الله ﷺ
