The Prophet ﷺ performed tamattu in the Farewell Pilgrimage, combining umrah with hajj. He brought sacrificial animals with him, driving them from Dhul Hulayfa. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ began by entering ihram for umrah, then entered ihram for hajj. The people performed tamattu along with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, combining umrah with hajj. Some of them had brought sacrificial animals and driven them along, while others had not. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Mecca, he said to the people, "Whoever among you has brought a sacrificial animal must not come out of any restriction of ihram until he completes his hajj. Whoever has not brought a sacrificial animal should perform tawaf around the House and walk between Safa and Marwa, then shorten his hair and exit ihram. Then he should enter ihram for hajj and offer a sacrifice. Whoever cannot find a sacrificial animal should fast three days during the hajj and seven when he returns to his family."When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Mecca, he performed tawaf. The first thing he did was touch the corner, then he jogged for three of the seven circuits and walked for the remaining four. When he completed his tawaf around the House, he prayed two rakahs at the Station, then gave the salam and left. He went to Safa and walked between Safa and Marwa. He did not come out of any restriction of ihram until he completed his hajj. He sacrificed his animal on the Day of Sacrifice, then proceeded to perform the tawaf of ifadah around the House. After that he came out of every restriction of ihram. Those among the people who had brought and driven sacrificial animals did the same as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had done.
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Layth is Ibn Saad. Aqeel is Ibn Khalid. The hadith was narrated by Muslim (1:351) from Abdul-Malik bin Shuayb bin Layth, from his father, from his grandfather, from Aqeel, with this chain. It was likewise narrated by Abu Dawud (2:94, 95) from Abdul-Malik bin Shuayb, from his father, from Aqeel, but this is an error in the copy of Awn al-Mabud, where mention of his grandfather was mistakenly omitted, and it is confirmed in the manuscript of Shaykh Abid Sindi of Sunan Abu Dawud.Munziri said (1731), "Bukhari, Muslim, and Nasai have reported it." Ibn Athir also mentioned it in Jami al-Usul (1403) (vol. 3, pp. 462, 463), and attributed it to Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud, and Nasai. It is likewise found in al-Muntaqa (2387), attributed to Ahmad and the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim). See also 6068 and 6240.Regarding the wording, "so some of the people offered a sacrifice," in H it reads "fa-in badala" instead of "fa-kana," and we have corrected it based on K and M, which is also what is confirmed in the two narrations of Muslim and Abu Dawud. As for the addition of "[Makkah]," it was not mentioned in H, and we added it from K and M, and it is also confirmed in Muslim and Abu Dawud.
