Its isnad is sahih. Saeed bin Harith bin Abu Saeed bin Mualla Ansari, the judge of Madinah, was a trustworthy Follower (tabii thiqa). Ibn Main said, "Well known." Yaqub bin Sufyan confirmed his reliability. Bukhari gave his biography in Tarikh al-Kabir 1/2/424, saying, "Judge of the people of Madinah." In Tahdhib he is described as "the storyteller" (al-qass), but this is an error of a copyist or printer, for the editor of Tarikh al-Kabir noted that in the book of Ibn Abu Hatim and in Tahdhib of Mizzi, as in Bukhari's Tarikh, and that Ibn Hibban said in Thiqat, "He held the post of judge in Madinah."The hadith is given at length under numbers 5275 and 5592, but those two are narrated by Abdullah bin Mura from Ibn Umar. Bukhari related it, 11/499–502, from Yahya bin Salih, from Fulayh bin Sulayman, with this isnad. He then also related it in abridged form, like the two previous narrations, through the route of Thawri from Mansur from Abdullah bin Mura. Muslim related it, 2/12, through the narration of Thawri from Abdullah bin Dinar from Ibn Umar, at length, matching this narration of Saeed bin Harith. Hakim related it in Mustadrak 4/304 through the route of Muafa bin Sulayman Harrani from Fulayh, with this isnad, at greater length than this, containing a story, and he said, "Sahih according to the standard of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), though they did not bring it out with this wording."The Hafiz (Ibn Hajar) referred in Fath al-Bari to Hakim's narration, claiming that he erred in adding it as a supplement. But Hakim intended to supplement the story that the two Shaykhs had abridged, so he was not mistaken in what he did. The Hafiz also noted that Ibn Hibban related it in his Sahih through the route of Zayd bin Abu Unaysa, corroborating Fulayh bin Sulayman, from Saeed bin Harith.
