The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When the people of Paradise have entered Paradise and the people of the Fire have entered the Fire, death will be brought forth and made to stand between Paradise and the Fire. Then it will be slaughtered. A caller will then announce, 'People of Paradise, eternity with no death! People of the Fire, eternity with no death!' So the people of Paradise will gain joy upon their joy, and the people of the Fire will gain sorrow upon their sorrow."
Its isnad is sahih. Bukhari related it, 11:361–362, from Muaz bin Asad, from Ibn Mubarak, with this same isnad, in similar wording. Muslim related it, 2:354, through the route of Ibn Wahb, from Umar bin Muhammad bin Zayd, in similar wording.Hafiz said in al-Fath, Qadi Abu Bakr bin Arabi said, this hadith has been considered problematic because it plainly contradicts reason, since death is an attribute, and an attribute cannot turn into a body, so how could it be slaughtered? A group therefore denied the soundness of this hadith and rejected it, while another group interpreted it figuratively, saying this is a form of representation, and there is no actual slaughtering taking place, and so on. All of this is forced interpretation and an intrusion into the unseen, which Allah alone has knowledge of. We have no choice but to believe in what has been reported exactly as it has been reported, neither denying it nor reinterpreting it. The hadith is sahih, and its meaning is also established through the hadith of Abu Saeed Khudri in Bukhari, and through the hadith of Abu Hurairah in Ibn Majah and Ibn Hibban. The realm of the unseen that lies beyond matter cannot be grasped by minds that are confined to bodies in this earthly world. Indeed, minds have failed even to grasp the true nature of matter that lies within their reach, so how could they presume to pass judgment on what lies beyond the scope of their capacity and their authority? Here we are in our own age, able to grasp the conversion of matter into energy, and perhaps able to grasp the conversion of energy into matter, through technology and effort, without any real knowledge of the true nature of either one. We do not know what may come after this, except that human reason is powerless and limited. Matter and energy, and attribute and substance, are nothing but conventions devised to bring realities closer to understanding. It is therefore better for a person to believe and to do good deeds, and then leave what belongs to the unseen to the unseen, so that it may perhaps be revealed on the Day of Resurrection."Say, 'If the sea were ink for the words of my Lord, the sea would surely be exhausted before the words of my Lord were exhausted, even if We were to bring another sea like it to replenish it.'"
