Ali bin Abu Talib reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me to Yemen, and we came upon a people who had dug a pit to trap a lion. While they were crowding and shoving around it, one man fell in and clutched at another, and that man clutched at another, until four of them had fallen in. The lion mauled them, and a man went at it with a spear and killed it, but all four died of their wounds.The relatives of the first man rose against the relatives of the last, and they drew their weapons to fight one another. Just at that moment Ali came to them and said, "Do you mean to fight each other while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is still alive? I will give you a judgment. If you accept it, that is the ruling. If not, then hold back from one another until you come to the Prophet ﷺ, and let him be the one to judge between you. Whoever commits aggression after that has no claim. Collect from the tribes of those who dug the pit a quarter of the blood money, a third of the blood money, half of the blood money, and the full blood money. The first man gets the quarter, because those above him caused his death. The second gets a third of the blood money, and the third gets half of the blood money."They refused to accept this, so they came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was at the Station of Ibrahim, and they told him the whole story.He said, "I will judge between you," and he sat down, drawing his knees up in his garment.Then one of the men said, "Ali has already given a judgment among us," and they related the story to him.So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ upheld it.Hanash said that Ali had also said, "And the fourth gets the full blood money."
