Ali bin Abu Talib reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me to Yemen. We came upon a people who had dug a pit to trap a lion. While they were crowding around it, jostling one another, a man fell in. He clung to another, who clung to another, until four men ended up in the pit. The lion mauled them. A man stepped forward with a spear and killed the lion, but all four men died from their wounds.The relatives of the first man rose up against the relatives of the last, and they drew their weapons to fight one another. Just then Ali came upon them and said, "Do you intend to fight while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is still alive? I will judge between you. If you accept my judgment, it stands. Otherwise, you must hold back from one another until you come before the Prophet ﷺ so he himself may judge between you. Whoever transgresses after that will forfeit his right."He continued, "Collect from the tribes of those who dug the pit one quarter of the blood-money, one third, one half, and the full blood-money. The first man receives a quarter because three perished on top of him. The second receives a third. The third receives a half. And the fourth receives the full blood-money."They refused to accept this and went to the Prophet ﷺ, who was at the Station of Ibrahim. They recounted the story to him. He said, "I will judge between you," and he drew up his knees in his garment.A man from the group said, "Ali has already judged among us." They recounted Ali's ruling to him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ upheld it.

عن علي رضي الله عنه قال

بعثني رسول الله ﷺ إلى اليمن فانتهينا إلى قوم قد بنوا زبية للأسد فبينا هم كذلك يتدافعون إذ سقط رجل فتعلق بآخر ثم تعلق رجل بآخر حتى صاروا فيها أربعة فجرحهم الأسد فانتدب له رجل بحربة فقتله وماتوا من جراحتهم كلهم فقاموا أولياء الأول إلى أولياء الآخر فأخرجوا السلاح ليقتتلوا فأتاهم علي رضي الله عنه على تفيئة ذلك فقال تريدون أن تقاتلوا ورسول الله ﷺ حي إني أقضي بينكم قضاء إن رضيتم فهو القضاء وإلا حجز بعضكم عن بعض حتى تأتوا النبي ﷺ فيكون هو الذي يقضي بينكم فمن عدا بعد ذلك فلا حق له اجمعوا من قبائل الذين حفروا البئر ربع الدية وثلث الدية ونصف الدية والدية كاملة فللأول الربع لأنه هلك من فوقه وللثاني ثلث الدية وللثالث نصف الدية فأبوا أن يرضوا فأتوا النبي ﷺ وهو عند مقام إبراهيم فقصوا عليه القصة فقال أنا أقضي بينكم واحتبى فقال رجل من القوم إن عليا قضى فينا فقصوا عليه القصة فأجازه رسول الله ﷺ
