Ali bin Abu Talib reported,

The Prophet ﷺ came knocking on his door at night while he and Fatimah were there, and he asked, "Will you not pray?"Ali replied, "Messenger of Allah, our souls are in Allah's hand. When He wishes to rouse us, He rouses us."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned away when Ali said this, and Ali heard him, as he was leaving, striking his thigh and reciting, "But man is, more than anything, contentious" [Kahf 18:54].

حدثنا عبد الله قال كتب إلي قتيبة بن سعيد كتبت إليك بخطي وختمت الكتاب بخاتمي يذكر أن الليث بن سعد حدثهم عن عقيل عن الزهري عن علي بن الحسين أن الحسين بن علي حدثه

عن علي بن أبي طالب رضي الله عنه

أن النبي ﷺ طرقه وفاطمة رضي الله عنها فقال ألا تصلون فقلت يا رسول الله إنما أنفسنا بيد الله فإذا شاء أن يبعثنا بعثنا وانصرف رسول الله ﷺ حين قلت له ذلك ثم سمعته وهو مدبر يضرب فخذه ويقول {وكان الإنسان أكثر شيء جدلا}
