The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O Allah, strengthen Islam through the more beloved of these two men to You, Abu Jahl or Umar bin Khattab." The more beloved of them to Allah was Umar bin Khattab.
حدثنا أبو عامر حدثنا خارجة بن عبد الله الأنصاري عن نافع
أن رسول الله ﷺ قال اللهم أعز الإسلام بأحب هذين الرجلين إليك بأبي جهل أو بعمر بن الخطاب فكان أحبهما إلى الله عمر بن الخطاب
Its isnad is sahih. Ibn Saad narrated it in Tabaqat 3/1/191 from Abu Amir Aqadi, Ahmad's teacher here, and Tirmidhi likewise narrated it 4:314 through Abu Amir, with this same isnad. Tirmidhi said, "The hadith is hasan sahih ghareeb from the hadith of Ibn Umar." Hafiz quoted it in Fath al-Bari 7:39 and mentioned that Ibn Hibban also graded it sahih.Hakim narrated it in Mustadrak 3:83 through Shababa bin Sawwar, from Mubarak bin Fadala, from Abdullah bin Umar, from Nafi, from Ibn Umar, as a raised hadith, "O Allah, support the religion through Umar bin Khattab." Then he narrated it through Saeed bin Sulayman, from Mubarak bin Fadala, with this same isnad, but he made it from Ibn Umar, from Ibn Abbas, and said, "A hadith sahih in isnad, which the two of them did not include." Dhahabi agreed with him.
