Ibn Umar was asked how many times the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed Umrah. He replied, "Twice."Ayesha said, "Ibn Umar certainly knew that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed Umrah three times, apart from the Umrah he combined with the Farewell Pilgrimage."
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Abu Dawud (2:153) narrated it through Zuhayr from Abu Ishaq. Munziri (1909) said, Nasai also narrated it, and Ibn Majah narrated it in abridged form similarly.Bukhari (3:478) and Muslim (1:357) narrated through Mansur from Mujahid that Ibn Umar was asked, "How many times did he perform Umrah?" He said, "Four times, one of them in Rajab." We disliked to contradict him. He said, We heard the sound of Ayesha, Mother of the Believers, cleaning her teeth in her chamber, so Urwa said, "Mother, do you not hear what Abu Abdul-Rahman is saying?" Ayesha said, "What is he saying?" He said, "He says that the Messenger of Allah performed Umrah four times, one of them in Rajab." She said, "May Allah have mercy on Abu Abdul-Rahman. He never performed an Umrah without my being present with him, and he never performed Umrah in Rajab at all." This wording is Bukhari's.Hafiz said in Fath, This is how it came in the narration of Mansur from Mujahid, but Abu Ishaq differed from him, narrating it from Mujahid from Ibn Umar, who said, "The Prophet ﷺ performed Umrah twice." This reached Ayesha, and she said, "He performed Umrah four times." So the two accounts differ, Mansur placing the disagreement on the month of the Umrah, and Abu Ishaq placing the disagreement on the number of times Umrah was performed. Ahmad and Abu Dawud narrated this.It is possible that the question was asked more than once, so that Ibn Umar was first asked about the number, and he answered, then Ayesha corrected him, so he deferred to her, then he was asked a second time, and he answered in agreement with her, then he was asked about the month, and he answered according to what he believed. Ahmad narrated through Amash from Mujahid, who said, Urwa bin Zubayr asked Ibn Umar, "In which month did the Prophet ﷺ perform Umrah?" He said, "In Rajab."The hadith of Mansur from Mujahid, which we mentioned from the Sahihayn, will come in the Musnad at 6126 and 6430. The hadith of Amash from Mujahid, to which Hafiz alluded at the end of his remarks, will come at 2695, and something of similar meaning will also come through Habib al-Muallim from Ataa from Urwa bin Zubayr, that he asked Ibn Umar, at 5416. See also what has already passed in the Musnad of Ibn Abbas at 2957.
