The Messenger of Allah ﷺ appointed Usama as commander over a group, and people criticized his appointment. So he said, "If you criticize his appointment as commander, you previously criticized the appointment of his father as commander. By Allah, he was indeed worthy of command, and he was among the dearest of people to me, and this son of his is among the dearest of people to me after him."
حدثنا يحيى عن سفيان حدثنا عبد الله بن دينار قال سمعت
أن رسول الله ﷺ أمر أسامة على قوم فطعن الناس في إمارته فقال إن تطعنوا في إمارته فقد طعنتم في إمارة أبيه وايم الله إن كان لخليقا للإمارة وإن كان لمن أحب الناس إلي وإن ابنه هذا لأحب الناس إلي بعده
Its isnad is sahih. Ibn Kathir cited it in al-Tarikh 4:255, from the narration of Imam Ahmad, from Sulayman, from Ismail, from Ibn Dinar. Then he said, Bukhari and Muslim both narrated it in the Sahihayn, from Qutayba, from Ismail, that is, Ibn Jafar Ibn Abu Kathir al-Madani, from Abdullah bin Dinar, from Ibn Umar, and he mentioned it.Bukhari also narrated it through the hadith of Musa bin Uqba, from Salim, from his father.
