He saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Abu Bakr, and Umar walking in front of the funeral procession.
حدثنا سفيان عن الزهري
أنه رأى رسول الله ﷺ وأبا بكر وعمر يمشون أمام الجنازة
Its isnad is sahih. Tirmidhi related it (2:137) through Sufyan bin Uyayna and others, from Zuhri, with this same isnad. Likewise Abu Dawud related it (3:178) through Ibn Uyayna. Malik related it in the Muwatta (1:224) from Zuhri, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ etc., as a mursal narration. Tirmidhi also related it through Abdul-Razzaq, from Mamar, from Zuhri, also as mursal.Tirmidhi said, "The hadith of Ibn Umar, this is how Ibn Jurayj, Ziyad bin Saad, and more than one other related it from Zuhri, from Salim, from his father, similar to the hadith of Ibn Uyayna. But Mamar, Yunus bin Yazid, Malik, and other memorizers related it from Zuhri, that the Prophet ﷺ used to walk in front of the funeral. The scholars of hadith all hold that the mursal version of this hadith is more sahih."Abu Isa [that is, Tirmidhi] said, "I heard Yahya bin Musa say, I heard Abdul-Razzaq say, Ibn Mubarak said, 'The mursal hadith of Zuhri on this matter is more sahih than the hadith of Ibn Uyayna.'" Ibn Mubarak said, "I think Ibn Jurayj took it from Ibn Uyayna."In Suyuti's commentary on the Muwatta, Ibn Abdul-Barr said, "This is how this hadith appears in the Muwatta, as mursal according to its transmitters. But a group connected it fully from Malik, from Ibn Shihab, from Salim, from his father, among them Yahya bin Salih Wahazi, Abdullah bin Awn, and Hatim bin Salim Qazzaz. A group of trustworthy narrators among the companions of Ibn Shihab likewise connected it fully, among them Ibn Uyayna, Mamar, Yahya bin Saeed, Musa bin Uqba, the nephew of Ibn Shihab, Ziyad bin Saad, and Abbas bin Hasan Harrani, with some variation among some of them." Then he cited their narrations with full chains.I [the speaker being Suyuti] say, the narration of Ibn Uyayna was recorded by the compilers of the four Sunan works. It is clearly evident that connecting the isnad fully is an addition from a trustworthy narrator, indeed from trustworthy narrators, and so it is acceptable. In Awn al-Mabud, citing Talkhis, it is mentioned that Ali bin Madini said to Ibn Uyayna, "O Abu Muhammad, people have contradicted you on this hadith." He replied, "I am certain of it. Zuhri told it to me repeatedly, more times than I can count, repeating it and going over it again, I heard it from his own mouth, from Salim, from his father." Ibn Munzir and Ibn Hazm likewise affirmed decisively that it is sahih, and this is the correct view. See 3585 and 4110. What further confirms its being connected is found at 4939 and 4253.
