Abu Umama bin Sahl bin Hunayf reported,

I was with Uthman رضي الله عنه in the house while he was under siege. He said, "There was an entryway we used to go into, and whenever he stood in it, his voice could be heard by those out on the paving."Uthman went into that entryway, then came back out to us and said, "They have just been threatening to kill me."We said, "Allah will suffice you against them, Commander of the Faithful."He said, "And for what would they kill me? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'The blood of a Muslim man is not lawful except for one of three things, a man who disbelieves after his acceptance of Islam, or commits adultery after marriage, or kills a person and so is killed for it.' By Allah, I have never wished for anything in exchange for my religion since Allah guided me, I never committed adultery, neither before Islam nor after it, and I have never killed anyone. So for what would they kill me?"
