Abu Umama bin Sahl reported,

We were with Uthman رضي الله عنه while he was besieged in his house. He entered a chamber from which, whenever he was inside it, his speech could be heard from the courtyard pavement. He went into that chamber and then came out to us and said, "They have just been threatening to kill me."We replied, "Allah will suffice you against them, Commander of the Believers."He said, "On what grounds would they kill me? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'The blood of a Muslim is not lawful except in one of three cases, a man who disbelieves after his Islam, or commits adultery after marriage, or kills a person and is killed for it.' By Allah, I have never wished to exchange my religion for any other since Allah guided me, nor have I ever committed adultery, neither in the days of ignorance nor in Islam, nor have I killed anyone. So on what grounds would they kill me?"
