Abaya bin Rifa reported,

Word reached Umar رضي الله عنه that when Saad built the palace, he said, "The voices have been cut off." So Umar sent Muhammad bin Maslama to him. When Muhammad bin Maslama arrived, he took out his fire-stick, kindled a fire, and bought firewood for a dirham.Saad was told, "A man has done such and such."Saad said, "That is Muhammad bin Maslama."So Saad went out to him, and Muhammad bin Maslama swore by Allah that Saad had not actually said it. Muhammad replied, "We will deliver on your behalf what you say, and we will carry out what we have been ordered to do." He then burned the door.Saad then came forward offering to give him provisions for his journey, but Muhammad refused. He set out and came to Umar رضي الله عنه, reaching him in the early morning. His going and returning together took nineteen days.Umar said, "Were it not for my good opinion of you, we would have thought that you did not deliver our message."Muhammad replied, "Indeed I did. He sends greetings of peace, offers his apology, and swears by Allah that he never said it."Umar asked, "Did he provide you with anything for the journey?"He said, "No."Umar asked, "What kept you from providing me with provisions yourself?"He answered, "I disliked ordering food for you such that you would have the cool food and I would have the hot, while around me are the people of Medina whom hunger has been killing. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'A man should not eat his fill while his neighbor goes hungry.'"End of the Musnad of Umar bin Khattab رضي الله عنه, the hadith of the Saqifah.
