I performed the pilgrimage and came to Madinah in the year that Umar was struck down. He delivered a sermon and said, "I saw in a dream what seemed to be a red cock pecking me once, or twice." Shuba was the one uncertain about that detail.Only a week passed before Umar was stabbed. Permission was then given for people to come in to him, and the first to enter were the companions of the Prophet ﷺ, then the people of Madinah, then the people of Syria, and after that permission was granted to the people of Iraq. I was among those who entered.Every time a group came in to him, they praised him and wept. When we entered, he had bound his belly with a black turban, and the blood was still flowing. We said, "Give us your parting counsel." No one but us had asked him for counsel. He said, "Hold fast to the Book of Allah, for you will never go astray as long as you follow it."We said, "Give us more."He said, "I charge you to care for the Emigrants, for the people will grow many while they grow few. And I charge you to care for the Ansar, for they are the mountain refuge of Islam, the place to which shelter was sought. And I charge you to care for the desert Arabs, for they are your root and your reinforcement. And I charge you to care for the non-Muslims under your protection, for they are the covenant of your Prophet and the sustenance of your dependents. Now leave me."He added nothing to us beyond these words.Muhammad bin Jafar reported that Shuba said, "I asked him about it again later, and concerning the desert Arabs he said, 'And I charge you to care for the desert Arabs, for they are your brothers and the enemies of your enemy.'"
