I performed the Hajj and came to Medina in the year that Umar was struck down. He delivered a sermon and said, "I saw in a dream as if a red rooster pecked me once, or twice." Shuba was the one uncertain about the number. What followed was that he was stabbed. He then granted people permission to come in to see him. The first to enter were the companions of the Prophet ﷺ, then the people of Medina, then the people of Sham, then he gave permission to the people of Iraq, and I was among those who entered.Whenever a group came in to see him, they would praise him and weep. When we entered, he had bound his belly with a black turban, and the blood was flowing. We said, "Give us a final counsel."No one else had asked him for counsel besides us.He said, "Hold fast to the Book of Allah, for you will never go astray as long as you follow it."We said, "Counsel us further."He said, "I counsel you concerning the Muhajirun, for the people will increase while they will become few. I counsel you concerning the Ansar, for they are the stronghold of Islam to which refuge was sought. I counsel you concerning the bedouins, for they are your origin and your reserve. I counsel you concerning the people under your protection, for they are the covenant of your Prophet and the sustenance of your dependents. Now leave me."He gave us nothing beyond these words.Muhammad bin Jafar said that Shuba said, "I asked him about it later, and he said regarding the bedouins, 'I counsel you concerning the bedouins, for they are your brothers and the enemies of your enemies.'"
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Juwayriya bin Qudama was a trustworthy successor. Bukhari related the hadith in Tarikh al-Kabir. Al-Hafiz said in Tahdhib 2:125, "He related it in the Sahih from Adam through routes stemming from it, and also attributed it to Ibn Abu Shayba, but he named the successor Jariya bin Qudama."
