Its isnad is sahih, see 291. The hadith was narrated by Abu Dawud 3:217, Tirmidhi 2:271, and Hakim 1:18, through the route of Hasan bin Ubaydullah, from Saad bin Ubayda, from Ibn Umar, without mentioning Umar in it. Tirmidhi graded it hasan, and Hakim graded it sahih, and Dhahabi agreed with him. The Hafiz also attributed it in Talkhis 395-396 to Ibn Hibban, and said, Bayhaqi said, Saad bin Ubayda did not hear it from Ibn Umar.I say, Shubah narrated it from Mansur, from him, saying, "I was with Ibn Umar," and Amash narrated it from Saad, from Abu Abdul-Rahman Sulami, from Ibn Umar. In most of these narrations, Ibn Umar states explicitly that he heard it from the Messenger of Allah. It appears, then, that he was present when his father took the oath, so sometimes he narrates it from Umar as the one involved in the incident, and sometimes he narrates it as something he himself heard from the Messenger of Allah, because he was there listening.Haythami did not mention this hadith in Majma al-Zawaid, even though it was not narrated in any of the Six Books from the musnad of Umar. Perhaps he considered its narration in Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi from the musnad of Ibn Umar sufficient, though this does not precisely match his usual method.
