I wrote this down directly from her account. She said, "I was married to a man from Banu Makhzum, and he divorced me irrevocably. I sent word to his family seeking maintenance, but they said, 'You have no right to maintenance from us.'"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You have no right to maintenance from them, but you must observe the waiting period. Move to Umm Sharik's house, and do not slip away from me without telling me."Then he said, "Umm Sharik has visitors coming and going from among the early Muhajirun. Move instead to Ibn Umm Maktum's house, for he is a blind man, so if you set aside any of your garments he will not see anything."She continued, "When my waiting period ended, Muawiya and Abu Jahm bin Hudhayfa proposed to me."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "As for Muawiya, he is a poor man with no wealth. As for Abu Jahm, he never lays the stick down from his shoulder. What about Usama bin Zayd?"Her family disliked this match, but she said, "I will not marry anyone except the one to whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has directed me." So she married him.

كتبت ذاك من فيها كتابا فقالت كنت عند رجل من بني مخزوم فطلقني البتة فأرسلت إلى أهله أبتغي النفقة فقالوا ليس لك علينا نفقة فقال رسول الله ﷺ ليس لك عليهم نفقة وعليك العدة انتقلي إلى أم شريك ولا تفوتيني بنفسك ثم قال إن أم شريك يدخل عليها إخوتها من المهاجرين الأول انتقلي إلى ابن أم مكتوم فإنه رجل قد ذهب بصره فإن وضعت من ثيابك شيئا لم ير شيئا قالت فلما حللت خطبني معاوية وأبو جهم بن حذيفة فقال رسول الله ﷺ أما معاوية فعائل لا مال له وأما أبو جهم فإنه رجل لا يضع عصاه عن عاتقه أين أنتم من أسامة بن زيد وكان أهلها كرهوا ذلك فقالت لا أنكح إلا الذي دعاني إليه رسول الله ﷺ فنكحته
