I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ along with some women from Banu Ghifar and said to him, "Messenger of Allah, we wish to go out with you on this expedition of yours," for he was setting out toward Khaybar, "so that we may treat the wounded and assist the Muslims in whatever way we can."He replied, "Go forth with the blessing of Allah."She said, So we went out with him. I was a young Jariya at the time, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had me ride behind him on the back of his saddle. By Allah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ dismounted toward dawn and made his camel kneel, and I got down from the back of his saddle. I noticed there was blood on it from me, for it was my first menstruation. I drew myself close to the camel out of embarrassment. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw my state and noticed the blood, he asked, "What is the matter with you? Perhaps you are menstruating?"I said, "Yes."He said, "Tend to yourself, then take a vessel of water, throw some salt into it, wash off the blood that got onto the saddle, and return to your mount."She said, When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ conquered Khaybar, he allotted us a share from the spoils. He took this necklace you see on my neck, gave it to me, and placed it around my neck with his own hand. By Allah, it shall never leave me.The narrator said, It remained around her neck until she died, and she left instructions that it be buried with her. She would never purify herself from a menstrual period without putting salt in her water for purification, and she instructed that salt be placed in the water used to wash her body when she died.
Its isnad is daif due to the unknown status of Umaya bint Abu Salt. They said, she is also called Aminah, but her condition is not known. The hadith was narrated by Abu Dawud (1/84, no. 313) and Bayhaqi (2/407), both in the chapter on purification.
