Umm Ruman reported,

While I was with Ayesha, a woman from the Ansar came in to us and said, "May Allah do such and such to her son!"Ayesha asked, "Why do you say that?"She replied, "He was among those who spread the story."Ayesha asked, "What story?"The woman told her what had been said.Ayesha asked, "Has this reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?"She replied, "Yes.""And has it reached Abu Bakr?""Yes."Ayesha then collapsed in a faint, and when she came to, she was shivering with fever. So I got up and covered her with a wrap.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came in and asked, "What is the matter with her?"I said, "Messenger of Allah, she has been seized by a shivering fever."He said, "Perhaps it is because of a story being told."Ayesha sat up to face him and said, "By Allah, if I swore to you, you would not believe me, and if I offered you an excuse, you would not accept it. My situation and yours is like that of Yaqub and his sons. 'And Allah is the One whose help is sought against what you describe' [Yusuf 12:18]."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then went out, and Allah revealed verses declaring her innocence. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned, accompanied by Abu Bakr, and entered. He said, "Ayesha, Allah has revealed your innocence."She said, "Praise be to Allah, not to you."Abu Bakr said to her, "Are you saying this to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?"She said, "Yes."Among those who had spread the story was a man whom Abu Bakr used to support financially. Abu Bakr swore that he would never again give him anything. Then Allah revealed, "And let not those of virtue among you and wealth swear not to give..." to the end of the verse [Nur 24:22].Abu Bakr said, "Indeed I will," and he resumed his support of him.

حدثنا علي بن عاصم قال حدثنا حصين عن أبي وائل عن مسروق

عن أم رومان قالت

بينا أنا عند عائشة إذ دخلت علينا امرأة من الأنصار فقالت فعل الله بابنها وفعل قالت عائشة ولم قالت إنه كان فيمن حدث الحديث قالت عائشة وأي حديث قالت كذا وكذا قالت وقد بلغ ذاك رسول الله ﷺ قالت نعم وبلغ أبا بكر قالت نعم قالت فخرت عائشة مغشيا عليها فما أفاقت إلا وعليها حمى بنافض قالت فقمت فدثرتها قالت ودخل رسول الله ﷺ فقال ما شأن هذه قالت قلت يا رسول الله أخذتها حمى بنافض قال لعله في حديث تحدث به قالت فاستوت له عائشة قاعدة فقالت والله لئن حلفت لكم لا تصدقوني ولئن اعتذرت إليكم لا تعذروني فمثلي ومثلكم كمثل يعقوب وبنيه {والله المستعان على ما تصفون} قالت وخرج رسول الله ﷺ قال وأنزل الله عذرها فرجع رسول الله ﷺ معه أبو بكر فدخل فقال يا عائشة إن الله عز وجل قد أنزل عذرك قالت بحمد الله لا بحمدك قالت قال لها أبو بكر تقولين هذا لرسول الله ﷺ قالت نعم قالت فكان فيمن حدث الحديث رجل كان يعوله أبو بكر فحلف أبو بكر أن لا يصله فأنزل الله عز وجل {ولا يأتل أولوا الفضل منكم والسعة} إلى آخر الآية قال أبو بكر بلى فوصله
