Umm Salama bint Abu Umaya reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever is struck by a calamity, let them say, 'Indeed, we belong to Allah and to Him we shall return. O Allah, with You I seek the reward for my calamity, so reward me for it and replace it for me with something better.'"When Abu Salama died, I said these words. Each time I reached, "and replace it for me with something better," I would say to myself, "And who is better than Abu Salama?" But I said it nonetheless.When her waiting period ended, Abu Bakr sent a marriage proposal to her, but she did not marry him. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Umar bin Khattab to propose to her on his behalf.She said, "Tell the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that I am a jealous woman, that I have small children, and that none of my guardians is present."So Umar came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him of this.He said, "Go back to her and tell her, as for your saying that you are a jealous woman, I will pray to Allah to remove your jealousy. As for your saying that you have small children, your children will be provided for. And as for your saying that none of your guardians is present, there is no guardian of yours, present or absent, who would object to this."

حدثنا يزيد بن هارون قال أخبرنا حماد بن سلمة عن ثابت البناني قال حدثني ابن عمر بن أبي سلمة بمنى عن أبيه

عن أم سلمة قالت

قال رسول الله ﷺ من أصابته مصيبة فليقل إنا لله وإنا إليه راجعون اللهم عندك أحتسب مصيبتي فأجرني فيها وأبدلني بها خيرا منها فلما مات أبو سلمة قلتها فجعلت كلما بلغت وأبدلني بها خيرا منها قلت في نفسي ومن خير من أبي سلمة ثم قلتها فلما انقضت عدتها بعث إليها أبو بكر يخطبها فلم تزوجه فبعث إليها رسول الله ﷺ عمر بن الخطاب يخطبها عليه فقالت أخبر رسول الله ﷺ أني امرأة غيرى وأني امرأة مصبية وليس أحد من أوليائي شاهدا فأتى رسول الله ﷺ فذكر له ذلك فقال ارجع إليها فقل لها أما قولك إني امرأة غيرى فأدعو الله عز وجل فيذهب غيرتك وأما قولك إني امرأة مصبية فستكفين صبيانك وأما قولك إنه ليس أحد من أوليائك شاهدا فليس أحد من أوليائك شاهد ولا غائب يكره ذلك
