The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by, and I was with him along with Abu Bakr, while Abdullah bin Masud was reciting. He stopped and listened to his recitation. Then Abdullah went into bowing and prostration.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Ask and you shall be given. Ask and you shall be given."Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went on and said, "Whoever wishes to recite the Quran fresh, just as it was revealed, let him recite it according to the recitation of Ibn Umm Abd."So I set out in the night to Abdullah bin Masud to give him the good news of what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had said. When I knocked at the door, or he said, when he heard my voice, he asked, "What brings you at this hour?"I replied, "I came to give you the good news of what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said."He said, "Abu Bakr has already come before you."I said, "If he has done so, then he is one who races ahead in good deeds. We have never raced toward any good without Abu Bakr getting there before us."

مر رسول الله ﷺ وأنا معه وأبو بكر على عبد الله بن مسعود وهو يقرأ فقام فسمع قراءته ثم ركع عبد الله وسجد قال فقال رسول الله ﷺ سل تعطه سل تعطه قال ثم مضى رسول الله ﷺ وقال من سره أن يقرأ القرآن غضا كما أنزل فليقرأه من ابن أم عبد قال فأدلجت إلى عبد الله بن مسعود لأبشره بما قال رسول الله ﷺ قال فلما ضربت الباب أو قال لما سمع صوتي قال ما جاء بك هذه الساعة قلت جئت لأبشرك بما قال رسول الله ﷺ قال قد سبقك أبو بكر قلت إن يفعل فإنه سباق بالخيرات ما استبقنا خيرا قط إلا سبقنا إليها أبو بكر
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Hasan bin Ubaydullah is Abu Urwa Nakhai, trustworthy. Qarthaa, with the qaf and tha vowelled with fatha and a silent ra between them, is Dabbi Kufi, a trustworthy successor who was among the earliest reciters. "Qays or Ibn Qays" reflects uncertainty on the part of the narrator, and he is Qays bin Abu Qays, whose father's name was Marwan. This has already occurred under the name Qays bin Marwan in 175, where the hadith there is from Alqama from Umar, and from Khaythama from Qays bin Marwan from Umar. It appears that Alqama heard it both from Umar directly and from Qarthaa from Qays from Umar. See also 228.
