Ayesha was asked about the night prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She said, "He would pray the evening prayer, then pray two units after it, then sleep. When he awoke, his water for ablution was prepared and covered, and his toothstick was ready. He would use the toothstick, then perform ablution, then stand and pray eight units. In them he would recite the Opening of the Book and whatever Allah willed of the Quran. He would not sit during any of them except in the eighth, where he would sit and recite the testimony of faith, then stand without giving the closing salutation. Then he would pray one more unit, sit, recite the testimony of faith, supplicate, and give a single salutation, saying, 'Peace be upon you,' raising his voice with it until he woke us. Then he would say the opening proclamation of greatness while seated, recite, then bow and prostrate while seated, praying two units sitting down. That made eleven units in all. When his body grew heavier with age, he made the nine into seven, sitting only as he had sat in the first arrangement, and praying the two units while seated. This remained the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until Allah took him."
