People came in to visit the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during his illness to check on him, and he led them in prayer while seated. They began to pray standing, so he gestured for them to sit down. When he finished, he said, "The imam is appointed only to be followed. When he bows, bow, and when he rises, rise, and if he prays sitting, then pray sitting."
حدثنا يحيى عن هشام بن عروة قال حدثني أبي قال
أن رسول الله ﷺ دخل عليه الناس في مرضه يعودونه فصلى بهم جالسا فجعلوا يصلون قياما فأشار إليهم أن اجلسوا فلما فرغ قال إنما جعل الإمام ليؤتم به فإذا ركع فاركعوا وإذا رفع فارفعوا وإن صلى جالسا فصلوا جلوسا
