Ayesha reported,

Regarding the verse "Indeed, Safa and Marwa are among the symbols of Allah" [Baqarah 2:158], she said, "Some men from the Ansar who used to make their pilgrimage devotion to Manat during the days of ignorance, Manat being an idol that stood between Makkah and Madinah, said, 'Prophet of Allah, we used to walk between Safa and Marwa to honor Manat. Is there any blame on us if we walk between them now?' So Allah revealed, 'Indeed, Safa and Marwa are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever performs Hajj to the House or performs Umrah, there is no blame on him for walking between them' [Baqarah 2:158]."

في قوله عز وجل {إن الصفا والمروة من شعائر الله} قالت كان رجال من الأنصار ممن يهل لمناة في الجاهلية ومناة صنم بين مكة والمدينة قالوا يا نبي الله إنا كنا نطوف بين الصفا والمروة تعظيما لمناة فهل علينا من حرج أن نطوف بهما فأنزل الله عز وجل {إن الصفا والمروة من شعائر الله فمن حج البيت أو اعتمر فلا جناح عليه أن يطوف بهما}
