The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had wiped his face during the year of the Conquest. He saw Saad bin Abu Waqqas, who had been present at Badr with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, performing the witr prayer with a single rakah after the isha prayer, that is, the late evening prayer, not adding anything more to it until he rose in the depths of the night.
حدثنا أبو اليمان حدثنا شعيب عن الزهري حدثني
وكان رسول الله ﷺ قد مسح وجهه زمن الفتح أنه رأى سعد بن أبي وقاص كان سعد قد شهد بدرا مع رسول الله ﷺ يوتر بركعة واحدة بعد صلاة العشاء يعني العتمة لا يزيد عليها حتى يقوم من جوف الليل
