The companions of the Prophet ﷺ used to exchange two young sheep for one older sheep a day or two before the day of sacrifice. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A young sheep suffices for whatever an older sheep suffices for."
حدثنا محمد بن جعفر حدثنا شعبة عن عاصم بن كليب عن أبيه
كان أصحاب النبي ﷺ إذا كان قبل الأضحى بيوم أو بيومين أعطوا جذعين وأخذوا ثنيا فقال رسول الله ﷺ إن الجذعة تجزئ مما تجزئ منه الثنية

Its isnad is sahih. Asim bin Kulayb bin Shihab bin Majnun is trustworthy, and his hadith appears in Muslim. His father is deemed reliable, and his hadith appears in the Sunan.The hadith was narrated by Abu Dawud, 3/96, no. 2799, and Nasai, 7/219, no. 4384.
