The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw a gold ring on a man's hand and said, "What are you doing with the jewelry of the people of Paradise?"The man came back later wearing a ring made of brass, and the Prophet ﷺ said, "I detect on you the smell of idol-worshippers."The man asked, "Then what should I make it from, Messenger of Allah?"He replied, "From silver."
حدثنا يحيى بن واضح وهو أبو تميلة عن عبد الله بن مسلم
رأى رسول الله ﷺ في يد رجل خاتما من ذهب فقال ما لك ولحلي أهل الجنة قال فجاء وقد لبس خاتما من صفر فقال أجد منك ريح أهل الأصنام قال فمم أتخذه يا رسول الله قال من فضة
Its chain of transmission is hasan, on account of Abdullah bin Muslim al-Qadi, whom some scholars considered daif and said that his hadith should be written down.Tirmidhi related this hadith 4/248, no. 1785, and said, "Gharib," in the chapter on clothing. Abu Dawud related it in the chapter on the signet ring, 4/90, no. 4223, and Nasai in the chapter on adornment, 8/150, no. 5195.
