Abdullah bin Abbas reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not recite to the jinn, nor did he ever see them.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out with a group of his companions, heading for the market of Ukaz. By then the devils had been barred from the news of heaven, and shooting stars were being hurled at them. So the devils returned to their people, who asked them, "What is wrong with you?"They answered, "We have been barred from the news of heaven, and shooting stars have been hurled at us."Their people said, "Nothing has come between you and the news of heaven except some event that has occurred. So travel through the east and west of the earth and find out what it is that has come between you and the news of heaven."So they went out, roaming the east and west of the earth, searching for what had come between them and the news of heaven.The group that headed toward Tihamah came upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at Nakhlah, while he was on his way to the market of Ukaz, leading his companions in the Fajr prayer. When they heard the Quran, they listened closely to it and said, "By Allah, this is what has come between you and the news of heaven."At that point they returned to their people and said, "Our people, 'we have heard a wondrous Quran that guides to right conduct, so we believed in it'" [Jinn 72:1–2], and the rest of the verse.Then Allah revealed to His Prophet ﷺ, "Say, it has been revealed to me that..." [Jinn 72:1]. What was revealed to him was only the speech of the jinn.

عن ابن عباس قال

ما قرأ رسول الله ﷺ على الجن ولا رآهم انطلق رسول الله ﷺ في طائفة من أصحابه عامدين إلى سوق عكاظ وقد حيل بين الشياطين وبين خبر السماء وأرسلت عليهم الشهب قال فرجعت الشياطين إلى قومهم فقالوا ما لكم قالوا حيل بيننا وبين خبر السماء وأرسلت علينا الشهب قال فقالوا ما حال بينكم وبين خبر السماء إلا شيء حدث فاضربوا مشارق الأرض ومغاربها فانظروا ما هذا الذي حال بينكم وبين خبر السماء قال فانطلقوا يضربون مشارق الأرض ومغاربها يبتغون ما هذا الذي حال بينهم وبين خبر السماء قال فانصرف النفر الذين توجهوا نحو تهامة إلى رسول الله ﷺ وهو بنخلة عامدا إلى سوق عكاظ وهو يصلي بأصحابه صلاة الفجر قال فلما سمعوا القرآن استمعوا له وقالوا هذا والله الذي حال بينكم وبين خبر السماء قال فهنالك حين رجعوا إلى قومهم فقالوا يا قومنا {إنا سمعنا قرآنا عجبا يهدي إلى الرشد فآمنا به} الآية فأنزل الله على نبيه ﷺ {قل أوحي إلي أنه} وإنما أوحي إليه قول الجن
