Abu Qatada reported,

While we were traveling with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on one of his journeys, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ tilted, or he said leaned, off his mount, so I propped him up with my hand. He then woke up.We continued on, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ tilted again, so I propped him up with my hand and he woke up. He asked, "Abu Qatada?"I replied, "Yes, Messenger of Allah."He said, "May Allah protect you as you have protected us through this night." Then he said, "I see we have caused you hardship. Take us off the road," or he said, "lead us aside from the road."So we turned off the road. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ made his mount kneel, and each one of us pillowed his head on the foreleg of his mount. We did not wake until the sun had risen and we heard the cry of the shrike bird.I said, "Messenger of Allah, we are ruined, we have missed the prayer."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "You are not ruined, nor have you missed the prayer. Missing the prayer applies only to the one who is awake, not to the one who is asleep. Is there any water?"I brought him a leather flask, or he said a small water container, that had water in it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed his ablution, then handed it back to me with some water still remaining in it. He said, "Keep this safe, for it will have a story."He ordered Bilal to call the adhan, then he prayed two rakahs. Then he moved from his place and ordered Bilal to call the iqama, and he prayed the morning prayer.Then the Prophet of Allah ﷺ said, "If the people obeyed Abu Bakr and Umar, they have been gentle with themselves and acted rightly. But if they disobeyed them, they have brought ruin upon themselves."When the people had lost track of the Prophet ﷺ, Abu Bakr and Umar had said to them, "Stay by the water until morning." But they refused, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ reached them at the end of the day when they were nearly perishing from thirst.They said, "Messenger of Allah, we are ruined."He called for the water container, then called for a vessel. A vessel was brought, larger than a small cup but smaller than a large bowl. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ tucked them under his arm, then began pouring into the vessel and the people drank, until all of them had drunk. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called out, "Is there anyone still in need?"He then returned the water container, and it had nearly the same amount of water in it as before.We asked him, "How many of you were there?"He said, "There were eighty men with Abu Bakr and Umar, and we were twelve men with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."

حدثنا محمد بن جعفر حدثنا سعيد عن قتادة عن عبد الله بن رباح

عن أبي قتادة الأنصاري قال

بينا نحن مع رسول الله ﷺ في بعض أسفاره إذ مال رسول الله ﷺ أو قال حاد عن راحلته فدعمته بيدي قال فاستيقظ قال ثم سرنا قال فمال رسول الله ﷺ فدعمته بيدي فاستيقظ فقال أبو قتادة فقلت نعم يا رسول الله فقال حفظك الله كما حفظتنا منذ الليلة ثم قال لا أرانا إلا قد شققنا عليك نح بنا عن الطريق أو مل بنا عن الطريق قال فعدلنا عن الطريق فأناخ رسول الله ﷺ راحلته فتوسد كل رجل منا ذراع راحلته فما استيقظنا حتى أشرقت الشمس وذكر صوت الصرد قال فقلت يا رسول الله هلكنا فاتتنا الصلاة فقال رسول الله ﷺ لم تهلكوا ولم تفتكم الصلاة إنما تفوت اليقظان ولا تفوت النائم هل من ماء قال فأتيته بسطيحة أو قال ميضأة فيها ماء فتوضأ رسول الله ﷺ ثم دفعها إلي وفيها بقية من ماء قال احتفظ بها فإنه كائن لها نبأ وأمر بلالا فأذن فصلى ركعتين ثم تحول في مكانه فأمره فأقام الصلاة فصلى صلاة الصبح ثم قال نبي الله ﷺ إن كان الناس أطاعوا أبا بكر وعمر فقد رفقوا بأنفسهم وأصابوا وإن كانوا خالفوهما فقد خرقوا بأنفسهم وكان أبو بكر وعمر حيث فقدوا النبي ﷺ قالا للناس أقيموا بالماء حتى تصبحوا فأبوا عليهما وانتهى إليهم رسول الله ﷺ من آخر النهار وقد كادوا أن يهلكوا عطشا فقالوا يا رسول الله هلكنا فدعا بالميضأة ثم دعا بإناء فأتي بإناء فوق القدح ودون القعب فتأبطهما رسول الله ﷺ ثم جعل يصب في الإناء ثم يشرب القوم حتى شربوا كلهم ثم نادى رسول الله ﷺ هل من غال قال ثم رد الميضأة وفيها نحو مما كان فيها قال فسألناه كم كنتم فقال كان مع أبي بكر وعمر ثمانون رجلا وكنا مع رسول الله ﷺ اثني عشر رجلا
