Zayd bin Thabit reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out for Uhud, but some of the people who had gone out with him turned back. The companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ became divided into two groups concerning them. One group said they should be killed, and the other said they should not.Ibn Jafar said, "The people became divided into two groups concerning them. One group said they should be killed, and another group said they should not."Bahz said, then Allah revealed, "What is the matter with you that you are two groups regarding the hypocrites" [Nisa 4:88]. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "It is Taybah, and it expels what is impure just as fire expels the dross of silver."Affan narrated this same hadith to us, and in it he said, "I heard Abdullah bin Yazid," and he mentioned the meaning of Bahz's hadith.

حدثنا بهز حدثنا شعبة قال عدي بن ثابت أخبرني عن عبد الله بن يزيد

أن رسول الله ﷺ خرج إلى أحد فرجع أناس خرجوا معه فكان أصحاب رسول الله ﷺ فيهم فرقتين فرقة تقول بقتلهم وفرقة تقول لا وقال ابن جعفر فكان الناس فيهم فرقتين فريقا يقولون بقتلهم وفريقا يقولون لا قال بهز فأنزل الله عز وجل {فما لكم في المنافقين فئتين} فقال رسول الله ﷺ إنها طيبة وإنها تنفي الخبث كما تنفي النار خبث الفضة حدثناه عفان وقال فيه سمعت عبد الله بن يزيد فذكر معنى حديث بهز
