The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us while we were washing his daughter, peace be upon her, and said, "Wash her three times, or five, or more than that if you see fit, with water and lote leaves, and put camphor, or a touch of camphor, in the final wash. When you are finished, let me know."When we finished, we informed him, and he handed us his waist-wrap and said, "Wrap her in this next to her body."Hafsa reported that he said, "Wash her an odd number of times, three, five, or seven."Umm Atiya said, "We braided her hair into three braids."
حدثنا إسماعيل أخبرنا أيوب عن محمد
أتانا رسول الله ﷺ ونحن نغسل ابنته عليها السلام فقال اغسلنها ثلاثا أو خمسا أو أكثر من ذلك إن رأيتن ذلك بماء وسدر واجعلن في الآخرة كافورا أو شيئا من كافور فإذا فرغتن فآذنني قالت فلما فرغنا آذناه فألقى إلينا حقوه وقال أشعرنها إياه قال وقالت حفصة قال اغسلنها وترا ثلاثا أو خمسا أو سبعا قال وقالت أم عطية مشطناها ثلاثة قرون
Its isnad is sahih. It is found in Bukhari 3/125, no. 1253, Fath, Muslim 2/646, no. 939, Nasai 4/28, and Tirmidhi 3/306, no. 990, where he said, hasan sahih, and Ibn Majah 1/468, no. 1458, all of them in the book of funerals, washing the deceased.
