We used to prevent our young unmarried women from going out. Then a woman came and stayed at the palace of Banu Khalaf. She related that her sister had been married to a man among the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who had taken part in twelve military expeditions with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She said, "My sister accompanied him on six of these expeditions."She said, "We used to tend to the wounded and care for the sick. My sister asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, 'Is there any harm if one of us does not have a jilbab and so does not go out?'"He replied, "Let her companion lend her one of her own jilbabs so she may witness the good and the supplication of the believers."She said, "When Umm Atiya arrived, I asked her," or she said, "we asked her, 'Did you hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say such and such?'"She, who never mentioned the Messenger of Allah ﷺ without saying "May my father be sacrificed for him," replied, "Yes, may my father be sacrificed for him. He said, 'Let the young unmarried women and those kept in seclusion come out,'" or she said, "'the young unmarried women, those kept in seclusion, and the menstruating women, so they may witness the good and the supplication of the believers, but the menstruating women should keep away from the prayer area.'"I said to Umm Atiya, "The menstruating women?"She replied, "Do they not witness Arafah, and witness this, and witness that?"
