Adi bin Hatim reported,

I said, "Prophet of Allah, we are people who hunt."He replied, "When one of you shoots his arrow, let him mention the name of Allah the Exalted. If the game is killed, let him eat it. But if it falls into water and he finds it dead there, he should not eat it, for he does not know whether perhaps the water killed it. If he finds his arrow in the game after a day or two and finds no mark on it other than his own arrow, he may eat it if he wishes."He continued, "When he sends his dog after game, let him mention the name of Allah عز وجل. If he catches up to it and finds the dog has killed it, let him eat. But if the dog has eaten from it, he should not eat, for the dog held it back only for itself and not for him. And if he sends his dog and it mingles with other dogs over which the name of Allah was not mentioned, he should not eat, for he does not know which of them killed it."

Sahih
