I said, "Am I asking about the hadith of Adi bin Hatim while I am in a region of Kufa? Should I not be the one to hear it directly from him?"So I went to him and asked, "Do you know me?"He replied, "Yes." Then he related the hadith, and said in it,"Were you not a Rakusi?"I said, "Yes."He asked, "Were you not the chief of your people?"I said, "Yes."He asked, "Were you not taking a quarter of the spoils?"I said, "Yes."He said, "That was not lawful for you in your religion."He said, "At that, I felt humbled within myself." Then he related the hadith.
حدثنا حسن حدثنا جرير عن محمد عن أبي عبيدة بن حذيفة أن
قلت أسأل عن حديث عدي بن حاتم وأنا في ناحية الكوفة أفلا أكون أنا الذي أسمعه فأتيته فقلت أتعرفني قال نعم فذكر الحديث وقال فيه ألست ركوسيا قلت بلى قال أولست ترأس قومك فقلت بلى قال أولست تأخذ المرباع قال قلت بلى قال ذاك لا يحل لك في دينك قال فتواضعت مني نفسي فذكر الحديث
