Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, was brought a case while he was in Yemen involving three men who had together claimed a child as their own. He cast lots between them, and the one upon whom the lot fell was assigned the child, but Ali made him pay two-thirds of the blood-money to the other two.Zayd bin Arqam said, "I came to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him of Ali's judgment, and he laughed until his molars showed."

أن عليا رضي الله تعالى عنه أتي في ثلاثة نفر إذ كان باليمن اشتركوا في ولد فأقرع بينهم فضمن الذي أصابته القرعة ثلثي الدية وجعل الولد له قال زيد بن أرقم فأتيت النبي ﷺ فأخبرته بقضاء علي فضحك حتى بدت نواجذه
